History

The Beginning: It is interesting to note as to how the school was started. The movement began in the month of February 1961 when the Presbyterian Church Synod in its annual session revolved to open a Christian High School. In the beginning of the next year, the School was started and officially opened on march 8, 1962 by Shri B.C Roy, the then Deputy Commissioner of Mizo district.

At the very outset, Rev.Lalngurauva Ralte, a man of letters and energetic was the headmaster. He was assisted by a pitiful number of two other teachers-Tv. in Mission Veng Presbyterian church) one peon-cum chokidar Pu Hrangtinthanga.

NAME OF THE SCHOOL

The School was first methodically named after the church as Mizoram Presbyterian church Synod High School. The Presbyterian Synod in its annual session during 2nd-11th December, 1966 decided to change the name of School from Mizoram Presbyterian Synod High School to Mizo Synod High School. The same case was put forward in the session of Synod during 1st – 9th December 1984 and the name of the school was further changed from Mizo Synod High School to simply Synod High School. Introduction of Plus Two system in our School in 1996 brought forth a new name and since then it has become Synod higher secondary school.

FINANCE RESOURCES

In the beginning, the school was totally financed by the church. The school received recurring grant in aids during the years 1972-1975 and later during the years 1972-1975 and later during 1976-1985, it was put under Adhoc grant in aid system. In 1985 itself, the school was brought under deficit system of grant in aids and this was a grand step towards the financial management of this school.

Transitional stage and upgradation:

One year had passed since its inception when the School was officially recognised by the Department of Education. In January 1966, the school under-full recognition from the Assam Board of School Education (SEBA).

In the year 1996, the school was upgraded to higher secondary school. Class XI(Sc) was opened with 70 students. After a couple of years, the school offered Arts subjects and XI(Arts) was opened with 121 students. At the present moment, the total enrolment of students in the higher section alone is more than 500.

Location and Area: The school is located at Mission Vengthlang, Aizawl. The total area of the campus is 28.20 bighas or 37738.59 sq.m. The site plan for the camp is shown below:

Above the school campus, there lies a mounted area which acts as a protective wall for the campus from the noisy city called Contact Sports Centre. The school area extends far enough to include this contact Sports centre.

In 1988, Rev.Rokhuma, the then Senior Executive Secreatry, on behalf of Mizoram Synod signed an agreement to lease out the land to Sports Authority of India(SAI) for a period of 50 years. The agreement letter reads:

  • 1.The Government will provide an open ground large enough (26mx14m) for playing a Basketball along side the contact sports centre building or elsewhere for the synod High School as the ground used by the High School for playing Basketball, Volleyball, and for Drill, exercise, etc. is going to be occupied by the sports centre. For this purpose the hillock may even be out down to a lower level, if needs be.
  • 2.The Government will put up a proper fencing all around the contact sports centre building at the side edge of the ground and to the side of the Synod High School a brick wall with a wire net on top of it to prevent flying balls.
  • 3.The Synod High School will have the privilege of using the facilities of the contact sports centre at any time (Ref.Govt.letter No.1.15011/29/88/DTE/SYS,Dt.14th Nov, 1988)

The act of the plot of land being given on lease is on requests for the same by the Government of Mizorarm.

ROLL STRENGTH

The School was started with a roll strength of 32 students with three teachers including headmaster and one peon cum chowkidar. The enrolment of students has been steadily increasing year after year. Right from the introduction of Plus two in the school, the number of students has increased by leaps and bounds. At present, the School is one of the biggest schools in Mizoram and provides a healthy learning ground for more than one thousand ardent pupils every year.
